Technique: Pedal Loom
Material: Natural Wool
Commission: Design Center of Oaxaca
Design Team: Laura Noriega and Lita Quiroz
Craftsmanship: Pastora Gutiérrez
For the “Binomios Creativos” project organized by the Oaxaca Design Center, I was assigned to work with Master Artisan Pastora Gutierrez at her pedal-loom workshop in Teotitlán del Valle. My objective was to assess her production processes, existing products, and the community context in order to identify proposals and potential improvements focusing on product development and integration into the contemporary market through diversification and design. The project spanned approximately eight months. Through experimentation and in depth analysis of the processes ranging from raw material preparation, washing, and dyeing to loom setup and weaving I decided to focus on creating a new color palette using natural pigments. We subsequently experimented with color combinations within the weft yarns and explored textures created by blending colors for application across various objects. We designed stools, poufs, and rugs in various formats, emphasizing a simplified weaving style that maximized the impact of color and color combinations.
I chose to focus on creating a new color palette using natural pigments and then experimented with color combinations and rapid weaving techniques applicable to various objects. We designed benches, poufs, and rugs in diverse formats, all emphasizing a simplified weaving style that maximized the impact of color and color combinations.
